My name is David and I’m a recruit from the Arapahoe County
Sheriff’s Office. I have been requested by Recruit Yost to write a guest blog. Let me share a little about my background; I’m
born and raised in Denver. I served in the US Army as a Military Police
Officer. I have been working at the Arapahoe County Detention center for the
last two years. Although I have some experience, I am learning an immense
amount of information.

The academy is intense. From day one you are pushed through
the paces. Each day brings its own sets of challenges. Academics, physical
training, firearms, arrest control, and driving to name a few. Each recruit has
to figure how to conquer those challenges, but you’re not alone. Fellow
recruits are your support system. We
help each other with academics, uniforms, or even lunch! As a class we’ve
developed from a group of individuals to a team.

A great example was our final exams for arrest control
included a written and practical test occurred last week. The weeks leading up
to the test consisted of practicing our newly acquired “skills” on anyone and
everyone. This included family members and friends. My wife certainly knows how
to appropriately apply a twist lock, which I regret every day. Walking into the
academy on the day of the test was somewhat comical. From the classroom to the
bathroom, EVERYONE was practicing some sort of technique. It paid off because
everyone passed with flying colors. One more major challenge conquered, on to
the next.

DRIVING! Although, I have done a number of different drive
tracks it simply never gets old. How many times in your life are you given the
keys to a car and are told “drive it like you stole it!”? All joking aside,
it’s extremely important to know your limitations and the limitations of the
vehicle. In an emergency, we have a duty to get there quickly but more
importantly safely. I’m looking forward
to learning different ways to push the patrol cars.

Although we only have four more weeks, it’s important to
stay focused. The POST test is on the horizon. The upcoming weeks we will
continue push and support each other to ensure that everyone passes the first
time. It will be challenging, but more importantly it will by rewarding.

Last week, week 16, marked one of the more interesting
experiences in my life. I was tased for the first, and hopefully last,

were slightly exhilarating upon their conclusion. It was such a change in pain to comfort in
fact, that I do not remember actually feeling pain. After watching the video of my reaction to
getting shot with the probes, I can pretty much guarantee that a high degree of
pain was absolutely experienced.

Along with taser training, we completed 6 tests last

have had great instructors thus far.
This academy has a reputation of setting its recruits up for success: 100%
success rate in taking the POST test to be exact. That is a comforting fact to know.

Along with POST, we still have one last set of skills to be

and I am curious to test my skills and learn how to become a better, more
police-y driver. (I’m sure you will find the term, “police-y” in the next
version of Webster’s Dictionary…)

Being prior military, I spent some time getting “familiarized” with OC
in the form of a gas chamber and some sadistic Drill Sergeant’s “OC can on a
stick” routine when soldiers found it difficult to stay awake. I want to make sure I am being clear in my
tone: I am legitimately nervous because of my previous encounters with OC, but
I understand the relevance of this impending exercise and I am attempting to

As we reach the end of week 8 in
the Academy, I look back at where we were in the beginning and reflect on how
far we’ve come. From a disheveled group

from never drawing from a holster, to drawing in less than 2 seconds and
delivering perfect shots from 25 yards.
While the heat has been a challenge, I can say that everyone has enjoyed
this part of the training and worked very hard to impress our instructors and

lessons and techniques that have been honed over decades of service. These are skills that will ensure that we “Go
Home”, each and every night, to our families and loved ones. They ensure that no matter what type of evil

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 marked our half way point…
While the first few weeks went by slowly (in an overwhelming way), the last 4-6
have flown by so fast I’ve often forgotten the day of the week.

Since this is a milestone week, I made sure I set aside an
appropriate amount of time to mark the occasion via blog. That being said, when
I say “appropriate amount of time,” I mean approximately ten minutes because
that is all I could do this week. My excuse: I have quite a bit of writing to
do for class. I’ll conclude my disclaimer with an apology for the brevity and
lack of detail in the below paragraphs.

Firearms training went from crawl to walk and finally to run
in what seemed like minutes (weeks = actual time frame for the
transition). In this relatively short
time we’ve had at the range, my firearms skills have increased
significantly. I came into this portion
of the program with some deeply imbedded bad habits. It was a rough time breaking myself of them
but once I did, I quickly became a better shooter. It’s the same story with our
arrest training.

Arrest Control is one of the most cathartic experiences I’ve
had in the Academy. We get to do ground
and bag work (punching bags) and I’ve determined that it is to me as yoga is to
a yogi; it’s almost meditative. It is one of the most effective ways to release
the stress of the week(s). This is a
totally controlled environment, so it’s safe.
At the same time it is the most freeing thing we can do at this
point. Honestly, I don’t think you even
have to be good for it to relieve some stress. Maybe others would disagree; I
can’t speak for my classmates… Of course, like everything else, the more you do
it, the better you get and the goal here is to improve.

Until next time...

Jeffco Sheriffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08331732034428970668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-781665710418799592.post-71537311027045392013-09-25T08:15:00.001-06:002013-09-25T08:15:16.850-06:00Week 7-9, Recruit Yost

Since last I shared my experience, several… ahem…learning
experiences have come and gone. That
being said, I have dubbed these last few weeks, “My exercise in failure.” It sounds harsh and slightly cynical, I know,
but don’t worry; I can explain why it is actually positive and fitting in a
good way. Here I go…

In the classroom, I have a system. I memorize, take notes, write flashcards,
organize/compose my thoughts, and clarify any issues. Outside the classroom, I stutter, hesitate,
and question every move I make because sheer memorization isn’t gonna cut it
anymore (yes I understand “gonna” is not proper English).

Leaving the comforts of the familiar classroom environment
to practical scenarios rocked my world.
It has definitely made the Academy more real than ever. It’s one thing to hear an instructor explain
a theory, it’s a whole different animal to put that theory (that you know
verbatim per Colorado Revised Statues) to practice.

At first, moving into attempting to act in a police capacity
(faux scenarios of course) seemed contrived. We were given instructions via
“dispatch” and we responded accordingly to law enforcement officers acting in
the roles assigned to them. It’s tough
to mentally prepare yourself to “arrest” a sworn officer who has been leading
our PT sessions or has instructed other various courses. Once you convince yourself that the situation
you are going into is as real as it can get in this environment, you can think
a lot more like a cop and put the skills you know into motion.

I’ve said several times before that you can’t get through
this with the mind set of “I know everything,” or “I’m infallible,” but I have
been a tad hypocritical lately. Since
last I wrote, I have had to take my own advice, eat crow, grab a big-ole slice
of humble pie, etc…. I have never been
one to claim to be all knowing, but after having so much knowledge thrust upon
me in the classroom, I thought I had this on lock down. Lesson learned. Making the mistakes that I
have been allowed to make has been wildly helpful. I’m grateful for the
opportunity to mess up in a safe place so that I may have the opportunity to
fix what I’ve been made aware of.

Bottom line: we all make mistakes; it’s how you respond
after that makes the difference. I could
allow this to take my morale out or plaster a permanent frown to my face, but
that would not only be less than beneficial to my future contacts in this
career, but it would make me stagnate.
Take it, learn from it, fix it, drive on.

“crawl-walk-run,” fashion, but it still feels as though time is passing at a
rapid rate. There have not been enough
hours in the day to complete all that I would like to, so the routine I

I’m going to break the rest of this down by topic since I’m
running a few weeks behind:

Report Writing- I have always fancied myself a recreational
writer; I enjoy corresponding through good, old-fashioned, written word. That being said, I have never stressed myself
out about writing a few paragraphs more than I have since this foray into
police-style writing began. We have some
excellent instructors in this section, but I am finding it a struggle to
reintroduce myself to no-nonsense writing.
How do I get a point across without the use of superfluous vocabulary
and mild hyperbole???

Firearms Training- First, a key point I would like to offer
those who have come from a military background: don’t act like you know everything…
There is always more knowledge to be gained.
If you go into this training with a closed mind, the time will crawl and
you will plateau faster than the “noobs” (get it? It means newbies). I am only mentioning this because I went into
this with a few bad habits I picked up courtesy of my military experience and I
am having to face my flaws head on and fix them as quickly as possible. Fun Fact: one of the instructors has actually
been able to trick me into shooting better.
What?! I never thought that was
possible.

Arrest Control- There is not much more I can say about this
training than, “ouch!” I have checked my
pride (necessary! If I had not, I would be in a constant state of embarrassment
as I learn this stuff) and started from scratch. I can’t say I am confident in my knowledge at
this point in time, but I can see myself being secure in my skills by the time
this is over (if not sooner).

Tests: Testing is becoming increasingly more difficult as
the time to study is decreasing in availability. Time management is crucial at this juncture
in the Academy. Whatever your study
habits are or were, you will have to step it up to keep your head above water
in this environment. I haven’t gone a
day without studying the classroom material in some way or another. I’ve started to annoy my friends and family
with my new found knowledge. Suffice it to say, Law and Order is not allowed in
my house anymore.

Standards/Classroom: As time goes on, human nature kicks in
and we open ourselves up for error. I guess
it’s just a natural part of any learning experience in a field like this. Even in their smallest form, laziness and
arrogance can be two attitudes that compromise safety in a way that none of us
can afford. It may be a hard pill to
swallow, but complacency is one thing that these instructors will not
allow. We are offered… gentle… reminders
when we lapse in our vigilance. I’ve
taken to preparing myself mentally to “sweat for our sins” on a daily basis so
that I am never surprised during a corrective run/pushup and squat-fest.

In the three weeks since I last wrote, I have felt more
exhausted, overwhelmed, and overloaded than I have ever felt before. Conversely, I have never learned as much,
felt as accomplished, and had as much fun in this short amount of time. No
change in attitude for this recruit. I
am still happy to be here, lucky to be chosen for this career, and excited for
the future.

Wow! Since starting
the academy 4 weeks ago, we have been very busy with many different activities
that are meant to build a solid foundation for our future in Law
Enforcement. The Director has done a
great job teaching us the Colorado Criminal Code and we have received CPR and
IED classes. Some great instructors have
come in to teach us all about Community Policing, Suspect Identification, and
Report Writing, among other subjects.
I’m very thankful for the LEO’s from all the different agencies, who
have taken the time to participate in our learning. We have heard so many great stories about
incidents that have occurred and what the LE community has learned from them. This is clearly a dynamic profession and no
two calls are exactly alike. Our ability
to provide outstanding service depends greatly on our training and professional
conduct in the worst of situations.

before we were allowed to stop. My PT

I tell you, this workout was light on the therapy and heavy on the tire. It involved 3, two minutes rounds of flipping
a 400 lb. tire and jumping into the middle and back out. This workout really emphasizes explosive

The second week is over and we are starting to really mesh

We had another busy week in the classroom, as we are covering
a lot of material in a short period of time.
We have discovered that in order to do well on the weekly tests, study
groups are important. On Tuesday, we had
the privilege of hearing many personal stories shared by Lakewood Agents that
served as a reminder of the difficulties that LEO’s face every day, how awesome
the responsibilities are, and just how vigilant we all must be.

The PT this week was great.
We are getting a good feel for how important our physical fitness is to
our job. There is no question that we
have all been a bit sore from the workouts and look forward to the weekend to
recover. After workouts like “Karen”,
“Cindy” and running ten 100M sprints, a 3mile jog feels like a day off.

We are all looking forward to the week ahead. The challenges in the classroom, the blood
and sweat of PT, and the synergy developing within the group are all making us
stronger, smarter and closer to accomplishing our goal of becoming the best we
can be. I am proud to be a part of this
group, and know that we are already developing relationships that will last a
lifetime.

Everyone said this academy is going to start flying by. Week 2 I did not believe them… Now that I am looking at Week 13, I am a believer. We are starting to get into more skills training and practical’s which is not only making the weeks fly by, but it is also helping tie things together. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know I had moments of feeling like I don’t know at all what I am doing. That feeling is starting to subside as the weeks go on.

Range days seem to be what everyone looks forward to. It is a hard job to be able to shoot guns as part of your work day, but someone has to do it! Every time we go up there, we are learning something new or shooting a new course. The firearm instructors are great, and I can honestly say I have learned something from each of them. On squad A, we had Recruit Finken, Wagner and Cito shoot a perfect score in our qualification series and on squad B, Recruit Lorch is killing it on the steel plates.

We learned building searches and in progress calls these last two weeks as well. We get to practice cuffing and take downs, but more importantly we are learning to use different verbal techniques to deescalate situations. We have already come so far from week 4 and our Ped contact scenarios. Everyone walked away feeling confident in their skills and knowledge. For building searches, we had the opportunity to work with the K-9 units from both Lakewood and Jeffco. For me, building searches was one of the best days of the Academy so far. I felt like a little kid watching those dogs work, it was incredible!

The whole Academy did a workout at Red Rocks this past week. We walked in formation to the amphitheater stairs, and the whole way people were stopping and taking pictures. It was a goose bump kind of a moment, and I sure am proud to be part of it! It was a hard work out but a fun day.

We are through most of the major case crimes lectures for the academy. One of the hardest days was the Crimes Against Children lecture, but the instructors did a terrific job with it! I have so much respect for those three ladies for doing what they do.

Bring on Week 13!

We have been split into two groups. Half of the class starts the day at the firing range, while the other half is at arrest control. At lunch the two groups switch, and finish out the day. This however does not stop the rest of regular class expectations during the week. However the training is well worth the added stress. Recruit Gindhart has been our class leader during this crucial stage in our academy, and he has done a great job keeping the class on the ball. The instructors for both firearms and arrest control have been great and give us 100% every day. Each time we hit the range or the mats we improve, which keeps our motivation high. We are nearly half way to the end of our journey here, and yet it feels like we are just getting started.

Not many other professions will you see gangbangers, shoplifters and a lovers’ quarrel all in the same day! We all learned a little about ourselves that day, mostly that we have a LOT TO LEARN! A little bit of advice for all, do not treat gang bangers in a scenario like your grandma, they will eat you alive! The role players dragged us out of our comfort zones and made us think on our feet. It was a challenging day, but so far one of the best.

Not only does he know a lot about the law, but the stories he tells about his time as a cop are freaking hilarious. It helps tie in the information for the tests and we get a good laugh at the same time. By the way, Elvis is not dead, he is just a Captain for Denver P.D. Ask Director Baca, he has proof!

We practiced falls, cuffed and rolled around in defensive modes. We all walked out with sore wrists and necks, but we had a blast. Agent Baca (Black Belt in basically every form of Martial Arts) is one of our instructors, and although I am sure he will be able to teach us a lot, part of me is scared to death of him. He showed us a few moves on other instructors where he twisted them and slammed them to the ground. Good times. I am looking forward to the challenge and the Advil.

Our Cross-fit workouts are getting harder by the week! We have yet to do the same workout twice, and each one proves to be both fun and challenging. ‘Gut Check’ takes the cake this week, for one of the hardest workouts I have ever done. We are all getting to the point where we look forward to our PT sessions and are bummed when we don’t have one for the day.

Week 4

Week 4 proved to be an intense week. Our classes got a lot more intense in topic matter; especially officer safety. Obviously, every recruit knows there is danger associated with this career choice. When that danger is brought to the surface and we see the bad times, we are humbled. We all walked out of the Academy this week with an ever bigger appreciation of how important it is to watch out for ourselves and our fellow officers. Officer safety should be our number one priority.

We had Improvised Explosive Devise training this week as well which turned out to be an awesome class! Deputy Stokely and Miller clearly know bombs, their role, and danger associated. Their knowledge and experience is admirable. We also got to light off an explosive, which is never not fun!

The little mistakes are still getting us even in week 4. The instructors are big on details, and when one of the recruits forgets details, we all pay. Pushups are their weapon of choice, and the slower and the more hovering at the bottom of the pushups is their preference. Even the ex-marines arms are shaking at the end of the reps. “PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS RECRUITS!” My arms are begging you!

We put on our duty belts for the first time this week, minus all the equipment, just to get a feel for them. Agent Ruybal said the novelty of them will wear off after sitting in class with them on for a week, but for now, we are like kids with a new toy.

Anymore when I look around, on lunches, recruits are either studying or working out. We have been encouraged to not only work out on the scheduled PT days, and for a lot of us, we welcome the chance to get out of the class and get sweaty! That is until agent Shay gets ahold of us. That man likes to push us to our max with his workouts, and I swear he has a grin on his face while doing it! A couple of recruits have seen their lunches re-emerge after one of the PT instructor’s sessions, but oddly, they keep coming back for more.

Another week down! 18 to go! (There will be more pictures soon, I figure you see one picture of us in class, you have seen them all! Practical's and scenarios will prove more photo friendly!)

Challenge. That is the one word that can almost sum up what the academy is. Everything is a challenge; academics, physical fitness, meeting and exceeding the expectations of academy staff. And that is the way it should be. We are all here because this is the kind of environment we desire. One where we are constantly being challenged and tested and improving ourselves be it mentally or physically.

I knew coming into the academy I would almost certainly be the youngest recruit, and I quickly found out that was the case. Living up to the years of experience my colleagues bring to the table is a daunting task, but I know that there is only one real core expectation from the academy staff; effort…100 percent effort. Always giving your best and then some, no matter if its how many pull ups you can do or if it is studying for our weekly test. We are all in this together, and we support each other no matter what our backgrounds or experience; each day we have grown closer as a class.

This week we continued learning more of the criminal code… particularly crimes against persons and crimes against property (articles 3 and 4 respectively, for those who would like to start studying now for future academies). Director Baca does a fantastic job teaching the criminal code, and each session with him is something we all look forward to. We are really fortunate to have him. Other topics that we worked on this week included biohazard awareness, use of force, and search and seizure. We got to hear firsthand accounts of several officer-involved shootings from Lakewood Police Agents, and are all thankful for their wisdom.

I am always sore. I am never not sore. The physical training (pt) portion of the academy has proven to be not only fun, but VERY effective. We are doing something different every day, for the purpose of "shocking" our body and muscles. And it is working. The PT instructors are tough and stay on us, but they encourage us just as much, to go full throttle till the end. Oh yea, and by the end I mean that millisecond before you feel like, uh, losing the contents of your stomach.

Week two brought Criminal Code and Procedure. There is so much to know and remember, that for a lot of us, this week was stressful. We have Director Baca in our corner for this one though, and no one knows more about the Criminal Code and statutes than he does. He breaks it down for us, and takes the legal jargon out and makes it easier to understand. He has said that we will know this forward and back before the end of the academy if it kills him.... and us. (I don't think he is kidding!)

I want to give a shout out to one of our fellow recruits that is representing the Lakewood Police Department. Recruit Boyd is the definition of "heart". He pushes himself everyday in our PT classes, never giving up, and always finishing the workouts, no matter how long he is at it. He brings out the best in our squad by proving if you give it 100% every time, you will feel good about yourself at the end. Crush it Boyd!!!

With every passing week, it becomes more real to everyone, that by mid June, we will be Law Enforcement Officers. It is pretty cool to know we are the future of our departments, and that in itself is enough to make us push ourselves academically and physically, to the best of our abilities.

We are already entering Week 3, which I am sure will bring as many challenges as the ones before it. More law. More pain. If anyone reading this is hoping to apply, I would buy stock in Advil because if our PT instructors have any say in it, we are going to need A LOT OF IT!!

Another week closer to being Whale Poo!

We have all learned very quickly that WATER BOTTLES DO NOT GO ON OUR DESKS! We have also found out that if you are not 15 minutes early, then you are late. The Academy Training Staff has reiterated those two little tidbits of information with "physical reminders".
